Case Aiken
Welcome to Certain Point of View's Trade School, where each episode a different host talks about a comic book trade paperback that they loved and why they love it.

00:07

Matt
Hey folks, welcome to another episode of Trade School. I am your host today, Matt, AKA Stormageddon. Shout out to Case Aiken for giving me an opportunity to talk about something I am incredibly passionate about. But before we get to that, of course I am a podcaster, best known for my podcast Fun and Games, which I do with the incredible Jeff Moonan, and Reignite, which I do with the wonderful Frankie Bradley Lestrange. A brief pitch on those pods at the end, but I am a prolific podcaster and DJ. I've been doing work in both spaces for like 13 years, which makes me want to turn to dust when I say it out loud. But enough about me, let's talk about what I am here to talk about, which is Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, which is volume one of the Scott Pilgrim series.

00:52

Matt
This comic is very near and dear to my heart and when K said I could only do one of the trades, I had to rack my brain on which to pick. And while I flip flopped a little bit, I ended up with volume one because I think as an early episode of the series and as a starting point, it just makes the most sense. I could talk about why I love something in the middle of the series, but I think truly this beginning is really great. I want to talk about it. A little history about Scott Pilgrim and me. I actually didn't discover the comic until the movie came out in 2010, directed by one of my favorite directors, Edgar wright. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, starring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill, the list goes on.

01:36

Matt
Not going to list the entire cast. It's a phenomenal cast. It's a fun movie, basically. What if video games rules were in real life, but it's never explained. And the movie, at least the first act, is almost identical to volume one of the Scott Pilgrim comic book series. Because, fun fact, the movie took so long to make that when they first wrote the script, the series, the book series was not done yet. Bryan Lee o', Malley, the creator of this series, hadn't finished it yet. And so while the first act of the film is very similar to this book, the rest of the film goes in a completely different direction, though still advised by Bryan Lee o', Malley, who is again, the creator of the series. So I had known nothing about this film other than it looked cool.

02:24

Matt
I liked Michael Cera like everyone else, had a huge crush on Mary Elizabeth Winstead. And I was like, I'm gonna go see this movie. Looks fun. Ended up seeing it like four times in theaters. I may be even undershooting that. And so I became obsessed with it. And so shortly after that, they put out a video game and I was like, I also discovered the books. And so I bought the books one by one. I found one and two in a local bookstore and then couldn't find three, but they had four and five. So I bought four and five on the spot, but couldn't read them until I finally found three. I think I may have gotten it on Amazon, or eventually they got it in the shop.

02:58

Matt
I do now, of course, have the entire book series and may cover others in the future. But for now, I wanted to start with volume one, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, because I think it's a great way to get into this series and comics that are not just about superheroes. I love superhero comics and I'm sure there'll be plenty in the series. But what makes Scott Pilgrim special to me is though they are superheroic stuff, it is mostly a day in the life or slice of life kind of book. I love those kinds of comics too. In fact, sometimes I find I love them more than the big superhero outings just because they feel more relatable to me.

03:33

Matt
So I'll give a little pitch of what the storyline is, because in case you are coming to this completely blank, I want to share why I really love this story. So Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life and the crux of Scott Pilgrim's story is we open in media res on Scott Pilgrim talking to his bandmates in the band Sex Bob omb, the best band name ever, about how he is dating a high schooler and he's dating this girl, Knives Chow. It's the first girl he's even considered dating since his breakup with the big X, which is comes up more later in the series. And it's very much clear that Scott is kind of just trying to put himself back out there, but doesn't really feel comfortable. Talks about how they've held hand once and he's not really super into it.

04:18

Matt
He's just trying to, I think, feel something again. And through this opening of the book, you also see glimpses of Scott's past and some other things. The thing that the book does that the movie can't, because it's got a limited runtime, is goes into why Scott is the way he is, which is basically an asshole. More on that later. But the crux of the story is things take a turn when Scott meets this girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, who he literally is seeing in his dreams, and falls for her and wants to date her. Finds out she works for Amazon, CA orders a package just so she'll come to the door so he can ask her out. They go on a date, and then he ends up staying at her house. They kiss.

05:01

Matt
The next morning, he asks her to come to his battle of the Bands, which again, Scott is in a band, Sex Bob omb. And then at that battle of the bands, his. I think at that point his now ex Knives comes and polarity ensues as Matthew Patel crashes through the roof of the concert venue. And it turns out this is Ramona's first evil ex. And the crux of this whole story is that in order for Scott Pilgrim to date Ramona Flowers, he must battle and defeat Ramona's seven evil exes from the League of Evil Exes. And it's gloriously stupid and fun and comedic while showing heart and also learning about these characters as people. I did kind of skip over that. Scott does make out with Ramona before breaking up with Knives, but then does break up with Knives to date Ramona.

05:55

Matt
And it's just. It's the complex life of like what young love is. And it's got a very rock and roll aesthetic. The movie, why I love it, although this is not a movie podcast, is because of the killer soundtrack and the music in it. A lot of the original tunes by Sex Bob OMB were written by Beck in the film. But anyway, this first book, I think I really love it and wanted to recommend it because I think if you like slice of life stories with characters who are flawed, but with surreal elements that never get explained that just are existing in this world. Like I mentioned before, Matthew Patel attacks Scott. Scott fights him with a 65 hit combo. They battle it out like video game characters.

06:38

Matt
Never explained why when Matthew Patel is defeated, he poofs into coins, which ends up being barely enough change to take the bus. As Ramona and Scott flee and Ramona can explain the situation. It's really kind of goofy in the best way. It doesn't take itself seriously, except for when it's taking itself extremely seriously in those moments where it's trying to convey heart and love. And it's a really interesting love story about flawed characters who the two main characters, Scott and Ramona, are rarely in the right as far as they are flawed people who have made mistakes and they're very forward about it. And it's a learning experience for Scott. The whole story becomes this kind of Scott's realization of the kind of person he's been and who he was and what he's become and how he can better.

07:29

Matt
And I don't want to spoil the rest of the run, but, like, it's just a really cool exploration on, like, self reflection, growing as people, and all the characters are really fun, you know, I really love how well they're written, how well they're drawn. I just. I can't recommend it enough. Again, as much as I love stuff like Green Lantern and Wolverine and Venom, and I will talk about books with those characters as well if Case will have me back in the future. But I think there's something about talking about a slice of life comic that just. I'm sure plenty of people love them, but it just feels less common in the landscape of comic books than the big superhero outings. Although I feel like, especially with indie books, that becomes less and less every day.

08:14

Matt
And like Scott Pilgrim, I'm pretty sure started out as a fairly indie book is bigger now because of the fandom, the movie, the video games, all of this other multimedia stuff, the Netflix series, all of that. But I think that if you've watched any of that or engaged in any of that, but never read the original books, I think there's no better time than now. They're easy reads. I am someone who struggles to read for long periods of time. My brain just can't hold that focus. And this book, I've gotten through multiple times, the whole series, multiple times, with relative ease. Especially if you have the movie as a backbone, I think you'll be surprised where there are changes and where there aren't. Like some lines in the film are directly ripped from this first book, which is great.

08:56

Matt
Like Wallace saying, oh, yeah, you're my bitch forever when talking to Scott about how in their apartment that they're in together, Wallace owns everything, basically. Yeah. So I think I've rambled enough. I really love this series. I think if you've been curious about it, please start with book one and check it out. Would be odd to start in the middle, but you could do that too, I suppose. Thanks for listening to me yammer on about this. I'm hoping to come back and talk about some other cool stuff or maybe some other underrated or overrated books, depending on what I choose to talk about next. But it's been a pleasure to be a part of something that also is inspired by a series I started to talk about me a little bit so I mentioned my podcast Fun and Games and Reignite earlier.

09:36

Matt
Fun and Games Broadly is a topic based discussion podcast where we either do broad topics within the games industry, we do video game console retrospectives, genre retrospectives, interview developers, composers, all sorts of creators about stuff related to video games. We have a sub series within that feed called Side Quests where every episode is a different host talking about a game they love and why they love it. And it is really kind of humbling that Case wanted to create a series to talk about trade comics and comics in general that you love and why you love it in a similar format. I've gotten a lot of compliments on the Side Quest series. I'm really proud of the work that I've done. As of when I'm recording this, we're barreling toward 400 episodes, which is insane to say out loud.

10:16

Matt
But anyway, thank you Case for having me on this. It's a pleasure to be a part of it. Check out Fun and Games. Check out Side Quests within that feed as well. Reach out to me if you want to do your own episode of Side Quests on a game you love and why you love it. We welcome anybody and everyone to do that series. I also do Reignite, which I mentioned earlier, which is a Play along podcast, started as a Mass Effect podcast and has now morphed into a Dragon Age podcast. We are following a strict Bioware theme for now, but who knows where we'll go from there. But we've got a lot to cover so far.

10:47

Matt
We are in the middle of our Dragon Age 2 series and so if you love Dragon Age 2 or just to hear two queer nerds geek out about a video game, you should definitely come check that out. As for me, you can find me@djstormageddon.com it has links to Fun and Games. Reignite the Fun and Games Patreon my merch store. Any way you want to reach out to me, all my socials. I'm most active on Blue sky these days, which is also djstormageddon.com and so yeah, thanks again for this platform to talk about something I've been obsessive with basically since I discovered it and has not yielded since. And as always, happy reading. Video games are a unique medium.

They can tell stories, immerse us in.

11:29

Matt
Strange, fantastic worlds, blur the very boundaries of our reality. But at the end of the day, video games are fun. Whatever fun is to you.

11:38

Case Aiken
I'm Jeff Moonan and I am Matt AKA Stormageddon. And on Fun and Games we talk about the history, trends and community of video games.

11:47

Matt
It's a celebration of all the games we play and all the fun we find within them.

11:51

Case Aiken
And there's so many more games out there, so we hope you'll share in that conversation with us.
